Experience shark cage diving in Gansbaai, one of South Africa’s best-known destinations for shark encounters in the wild. Departing from Kleinbaai, this marine adventure gives you the opportunity to get remarkably close to sharks from the safety of a professionally operated cage.
Bronze whaler sharks, also known as copper sharks, are commonly encountered in these waters, while other shark species may also be seen. Great White Sharks are historically associated with Gansbaai, but sightings are rare and unpredictable. Shark species, numbers and sightings can never be guaranteed.
What to Expect on the Day
Your experience begins in Kleinbaai, where you’ll meet the crew and receive a full safety briefing before boarding the shark-diving vessel. The day’s dive location is selected according to weather, sea conditions and shark activity.
Guests choosing the standard surface cage dive use a simple breath-holding technique as sharks pass the cage. Wetsuits, masks and cage-diving equipment are provided, and no scuba diving qualification is required.
The pre-booked Hookah cage dive allows you to breathe through a regulator connected to the boat’s air system, so you can remain underwater without repeatedly holding your breath. No scuba diving qualification is required.
Hookah diving is subject to availability and must be selected when booking.
When you’re not in the cage, you can watch the sharks and other marine activity from the boat. If you prefer to stay dry, boat-based viewing is available for non-divers too.
Make More of Your Gansbaai Day
Guests already travelling to Kleinbaai for shark cage diving can add seasonal boat-based whale watching from nearby Gansbaai Harbour, approximately seven minutes away by road. This gives you the opportunity to enjoy two exceptional marine experiences during the same journey from Cape Town.
The whale-watching add-on is available until late November. Both trips are weather dependent, and the shark-diving meeting time is normally confirmed the day before departure. The two experiences can therefore be combined only when sea conditions and departure times align.
Transport for the Shark and Whale Combination
Self-drive guests can travel between Kleinbaai and Gansbaai Harbour in their own vehicle.
Guests travelling from Cape Town must reserve dedicated combo transport at R5,500 per vehicle for up to four guests. The vehicle remains in the Gansbaai area and returns to Cape Town after the whale-watching trip.
The ordinary R950 per-person shared shark shuttle cannot be used for the combination, as it returns to Cape Town after the shark dive while combo guests remain in Gansbaai for approximately another three to four hours.

- No scuba diving qualification is required for either the standard surface cage dive or the Hookah cage dive
- The minimum age for cage diving is 12 years
- Children aged 5–12 may participate as boat-based viewers and must be accompanied by a responsible adult
- Hookah diving must be booked in advance and is subject to availability
- All trips are subject to availability, weather and sea conditions
- Exact meeting and Cape Town collection times are normally confirmed the day before departure
- Guests should keep the full day available, as meeting and finishing times cannot be guaranteed in advance
- Shark species, numbers and sightings cannot be guaranteed
- No refund is offered when a trip operates but no sharks are sighted; the operator’s applicable return-voucher policy will apply
- The seasonal whale-watching add-on is available until late November and can be combined with shark cage diving only when both operators’ departure times and sea conditions allow
- Whale species, numbers and sightings cannot be guaranteed
- Combo guests must self-drive or reserve dedicated transport
- The R950 shared shark shuttle cannot be used for the shark-and-whale combination
- Guests must follow all safety instructions provided by the crew
- Late arrival may result in the trip being missed
